A Woonsocket man accused of beating his girlfriend to death has been ordered held without bail.

Emmanuel Algaria, 21, was formerly charged with felony assault for allegedly beating up his girlfriend 24-year-old Catherine Salvi in December. Monday morning in Providence District Court the charges were upgraded to murder.

Salvi died in January as a result of her injuries. She spent the last few weeks of her life in a coma.

No plea was entered on Algaria's behalf.
