Early morning stabbing sends man to hospital

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Providence police are investigating a stabbing that sent a man to the hospital early Sunday morning.

Neighbors say they’re surprised to see a crime so violent happen in such a crowded area of the City.

“Who’s going to go do that to somebody in a spot that is so public,” Providence resident Christen Cook told ABC6.

Providence police say officers responded to Ship Street at about 2:15 a.m. for a reported stabbing.

Officers found a 36-year-old man sitting on the sidewalk. The victim’s right leg and side were covered in blood due to a stab wound.

Police said the man told them that the stabbing happened in the “downtown area,” but didn’t provide any further details.

The man was treated at the scene and then transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.

“I know that stuff like that happens in cities but you would think it would be in the places that not a lot of people are. Not in commonly walked about areas.”

Providence police are investigating.
