PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ A 22-year-old man has pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in the slaying of a woman found shot to death in a car near a Providence elementary school.

Derell Johnson was sentenced on Tuesday in Rhode Island Superior Court to life in prison for the murder of 21-year-old Briana Giorgio of Cranston.

Prosecutors say Giorgio was waiting in her car outside of Webster Elementary School the evening of April 1 when Johnson approached and shot Giorgio through the open driver’s side door. They say Giorgio and Johnson had arranged a drug deal.

Prosecutors say the bullet entered Giorgio’s chest and pierced her heart. She was later pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital.

Prosecutors say Johnson confessed to the murder after he was caught by police.
