Man stabbed in downtown Providence, police search for 3 suspects

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence police are searching for three suspects who allegedly stabbed a man after a botched robbery downtown.

The stabbing happened just before 9 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Weybosset and Pine streets.

Police said when they arrived at the scene, they found a 35-year-old man sitting on the sidewalk in front of the Hampton Inn Suites.

The victim told police he was in the lower-level parking garage behind the hotel on Pine Street, when three boys approached him telling him to “run his pockets and drop his satchel.”

Police said the victim refused and tried to separate himself from them. That’s when police said he was stabbed in the lower right side of his back.

Greg Rice has been coming to Providence for years and said crimes like this are nothing new, But, he believes criminals are becoming bolder.

“Providence has made a drastic leap in the past ten years that I’ve been here, and to see something like that is not reflective of the hard work that I think the city has done,” said Rice.
“I don’t think we respect our police anymore. I don’t think we respect our institutions. So, we need to support them because they’re protecting us.”

The three suspects were described as short Black males who were all last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirts.

Police said the victim said one the suspects had a knife and believed the other had a gun.

The victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for the stab wound.

No further information was immediately released.
