Man stabbed in Providence overnight

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence police said that a man was stabbed in the city early Wednesday morning.

A patrolling officer was flagged down at about 1 a.m. while walking near Dyer and Dorrance streets.

Police said Bryan Wieczorek, 46, had been stabbed near the Pedestrian Foot Bridge.

Investigators tracked down and arrested Brandon Armstrong, 35, who they said is a suspect in the incident. During a pat down, police found a knife in Armstrong’s short pockets.

Wieczoerk told police that he was using the portable toilet when Armstrong opened the door to the bathroom and said “you want to play,” before hitting him in the chest.

Armstrong said that he was sleeping inside the portable toilet when the victim and another man opened the door and began assaulting him in an attempting to rob him, police said. He said he took out his knife in self-defense.

Armstrong was charged with felony assault.
