Man to be sentenced for murder of woman in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A man is expected to be sentenced Tuesday for the murder of a woman in Providence.

Derek Sheppard will appear in Providence County Superior Court on charges in connection to the killing of 50-year-old Bernadette Ortiz last year.

Providence police found Ortiz shot to death on the second floor of a Harold Street home on Feb. 9, 2022.

Sheppard was arrested in Georgia two days later.

He was indicted by a grand jury last year and is expected to plead guilty to murder.
