Man wanted for theft in East Providence faces judge

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A man wanted for theft faced a judge on multiple charges Tuesday afternoon.

According to the East Providence Police Department, 55-year-old William Phipps was arrested after an investigation into a break-in.

On Sunday, August 27, 2017, around 1:45 PM members of the East Providence Police Patrol Division responded to a report of a break and enter of a residence on Pawtucket Ave.

The a woman called police stating she was mowing her lawn and observed a white male closing her back door and walking away.

She found her door was broken and money and jewelry were missing, and her 95-year-old mother was in the home and in bed when Phipps entered her room.

Phipps was then seen running north on Pawtucket Ave.

East Providence Police, with the help of the Glocester Police Department, developed a suspect and obtained an arrest warrant for Phipps.

“On September 2, 2017, Detectives from the East Providence Police Department, with the assistance of the Providence Police Department, arrested William W. Phipps on the charges with Breaking and Entering of a Dwelling of a Person Over 60 Year of Age When Resident is Home and Larceny over $1,500,” said the East Providence Police Department.

At his arraignment, his bail was set at $50,000 with surety and he was held for a future court appearance as a bail violator.

“During the course of the investigation numerous pieces of jewelry that did not belong to our victim. Any agency with similar crimes should contact the East Providence Police,” added East Providence Police.
