NARRANGANSETT, R.I. (WLNE) — The Department of Environmental Management on Thursday identified the man who drowned earlier this week trying to save two people at a state beach in Narragansett.

The drowning happened at about 7 p.m. Tuesday at Scarborough North State Beach.

Mike Healey, a spokesperson for DEM, said Idmael Elmonus, 38, was trying to rescue a 17-year-old boy and 20-year-old Moraida Medina, both of Central Falls, who were struggling in the water.

Elmonus, of Cranston, didn’t know the boy or Medina.

All three were taken to South County Hospital, where the 38-year-old died. The two swimmers were later released.
