Mass. Firefighter Killed in Motorcycle Crash

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) – A New Bedford firefighter is dead after he crashed his motorcycle into a parked car.

Police said it appears 31-year-old Eric Fernandes was riding with three other motorcyclists when the accident happened Thursday night in New Bedford.

They said he died from his injuries at a local hospital. Police were still investigating the accident.

Fernandes was a five-year veteran of the fire department. On Friday, his father Stephen Fernandes told The Standard-Times that his son was a “great person,” loved by police and firefighters.

In a statement, Mayor Scott Lang said all of New Bedford was mourning Fernandes' death and called it a “tremendous tragedy for our city.”

Fernandes' death is the second time in four years a New Bedford firefighter has been killed in a motorcycle accident.
