New Bedford, Mass. (WLNE) — The lobster industry in Massachusetts is beginning to feel the impact of new tariffs placed on seafood headed to China.

China imposed the 25% tariff after President Trump placed tariffs on Chinese goods.

Local markets like the lobster trap in Bourne say they’ve already seen a sharp drop in orders from China.

The Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association worries the tariffs will ultimately come out of harvesters’ bottom line, and could hit consumers as well.

We’re told other industries like scalloping could also be at risk.

But fishermen we spoke to in New Bedford say they’ve yet to feel the effects.

The Lobstermen’s Association is working with Massachusetts’ Congressional delegation on an amendment to allow Gov. Baker to declare an emergency, so that fishermen or dealers can recoup their losses.
