Mass. Treasurer warns of unclaimed property text scam

BOSTON (WLNE)- Massachusetts state treasurer Deborah Goldberg issued a warning about a phone scam that sends a text purporting to be from the Massachusetts Unclaimed Property Division (UCP).

Goldberg said the texts are not sent from the office and should be ignored.

“It has come to our attention that text messages claiming to be from the Massachusetts Unclaimed Property Division have been sent to residents across the state,” Goldberg said. “Our goal is to ensure that no Massachusetts citizen is taken advantage of as part of this scam.”

Goldberg said there’s an easy way to find out if you’re owed money in Massachusetts– visit https://findmassmoney.com.

According to the treasurer, odds are pretty good that you may be missing some money as well. The UCP has over $3.4 billion in unclaimed property, and it’s estimated that one in 10 Massachusetts residents are owed money.

Anyone with questions should call the UCP at  (617) 367-0400.
