Massachusetts Ebola survivor leaves hospital

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) _ A Massachusetts doctor successfully treated for Ebola has been discharged from the hospital after being admitted over the weekend for an upper respiratory infection.

Alison Duffy, a spokeswoman for UMass Memorial Medical Center, said Dr. Rick Sacra left the hospital Monday morning.

The hospital and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Sunday that Sacra’s symptoms were not due to an Ebola relapse. Doctors had said they did not suspect his symptoms were Ebola, but he was placed in temporary isolation and tested as a precaution.

Sacra, of Holden, contracted the virus while working with a missionary group in Liberia. He returned to Massachusetts Sept. 25 after weeks of treatment at the Omaha, Nebraska, hospital now treating a video journalist from Rhode Island who contracted Ebola working in Liberia.
