FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) – A former Norton resident and member of the Bristol County Most Wanted Fugitives List has been arrested in Vermont.

The Bristol County DA’s office said 58-year-old Anthony Schmitka has been on the run since 2016 when he failed to appear in Attleboro District Court.

Schmitka, accused of systematically stealing more than $100,000 from his elderly father, was indicted in Superior Court on two charges of Larceny over $250 from a person over the age of 60.

The DA’s office announced the Bristol County Most Wanted Fugitives List in February, marking Schmitka as one of the fugitives.

After broadcasting Schmitka’s picture and information, authorities received a tip that he was hiding in Woodstock, Vermont.

Massachusetts State Police and the Violent Fugitives Apprehension Section, with the assistance of US Marshals, were able to locate Schmitka and take him into custody Wednesday.

The DA’s office said Schmitka is expected to be extradited back to Massachusetts and appear in Fall River Superior Court.
