Massachusetts high school basketball referee punched by player, police say

Cohasset High School (Cohasset Public Schools)

COHASSET, Mass. (WLNE) — A high school basketball player has been accused of punching a referee during a high school game in Cohasset Wednesday night.

The incident happened during a game at Cohasset High School between Cohasset and Excel High School of Boston, according to police.

Cohasset Police Chief Williams Quigley said officers were called to a gym for reports that a 17-year-old player from Excel punched one of the referees in the face during the course of the game.

“There is no place for violence of any kind in a school and we are thankful that the victim in this incident was not seriously injured,” Quigley said.

Quigley said the game was suspended immediately and the gym was cleared out.

The official did not require medical attention, according to police.

Quigley said the player accused of throwing the punch has been identified and the investigation is ongoing.
