WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE): Joseph Gillespie, 57, died after he was pulled out of the water off the coast of Conimicut Point on Saturday.

Gillespie is the latest in a number of deaths at Conimicut Point over the years.

In 2013, Javon Jimenez, 16, from Providence drowned after being swept off the sandbar at Conimicut Point.

Also in 2013, Edward Wessel, 53, died while kayaking at Conimicut Point. Police believe Wessel died from a medical condition when he was in the water.

In 2018, 46-year-old Michael Perry’s Body was discovered off of Barrington after police said he left Conimicut Point in a Kayak.

There are signs warning people of the strong currents and dangerous sandbar. There are also no lifeguards on duty in the area.

“When you take those chances of going to these properties that don’t have lifeguards and aren’t established for swimming, you run the risk of what apparently happened on Saturday,” Jennifer Ogren, Associate Administrator of Rhode Island State Parks, said.
