Matos hosts Hispanic Heritage Month ceremony honoring local heroes

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos hosted a Hispanic Heritage Month closing ceremony in Providence Saturday.

In a release, Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos said Community Hero awards were presented to “ten Rhode Islanders who have gone above and beyond to aid the Hispanic community during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The 10 people awarded include:
  • Dr. Annie DeGroot and Clinic Esperanza
  • Arelis Pena Brito and Acontecer Latino
  • Donna O’Connor and all Providence Public School nurses
  • Dr. Dioscaris Garcia
  • Dr. Eugenio Fernandez and Asthenis Pharmacy
  • George Ortiz and the Elisha Project
  • Heiny Maldonado and Fuerza Laboral
  • Shirley Moore and Be Moore Interpreting
  • Rosa De Castillo
  • Zuleyma Gomez
