After a vote by the Rhode Island House of Representatives, Nicholas Mattiello of Cranston has been chosen to replace Gordon Fox as Speaker of the House.  He received 61 votes and says he'll be a different kind of leader.

“I have my own style as does everybody.  I am gonna work through my leadership team and the members a little bit more than we have in the past,” said Speaker Mattiello.

He has roughly 100 days left in this year's session.  He is not setting an agenda, but is focused on the economy.

“I was elected speaker to work on jobs and the economy.  I believe that's gonna be my priority,” said Speaker Mattiello.

Fox resigned on Saturday after his home and State House office was raided by federal investigators.

Earlier in the day, Representative Michael Marcello called Mattiello and acknowledged that Mattiello would win the State's top spot. Marcello told Mattiello he was still planning to have his name placed in the nomination.

“We had the opportunity to make real dramatic change here, change the leadership, change the way the house is governed and the fact of the matter is we didn't,” said Rep. Marcello.

Mattiello was elected to the House of Representatives in 2006. He served as the House Majority Leader under Gordon Fox.
