May unemployment rate increases in Rhode Island

The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training released new information Thursday that state unemployment increased by 0.1% from April to May of 2013.

The increase to an 8.9% unemployment rate was sparked by the loss of 200 jobs in the past month, specifically in the Educational Services section. This marks the first rise in Rhode Island unemployment over a month span since July 2011.

The U.S. unemployment rate also increased by one-tenth of a percentage point, to 7.6%, between the months of April and May of 2013.
