Mayor-elect Picozzi, City Council members and School Committee to be sworn into office
WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) – Mayor-elect Frank Picozzi, members of the City Council and School Committee will be sworn into office on Tuesday.
According to the Mayor-elect’s office, the ceremonies will begin at noon where Mayor-elect Picozzi and his wife Kim, along with members of his family will gather on the steps of Warwick City Hall for the inauguration ceremony.
Supreme Court Justice and former Warwick Mayor Francis X. Flaherty was to administer the oath of office, but according to a representative from the Mayor-elect’s office, he has tested positive for Covid-19. Stephen Isherwood, a District Court Judge and Warwick resident, will take Justice Flaherty’s place.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the ceremony will not be open to the public and other parts of the inauguration will be held virtually. However, the Mayor says he would like to have a food truck event at Rocky Point to celebrate all of the elected officials past and present when it is safe to do so again.
The Mayor-elect will take place in several virtual inauguration ceremonies, including the Rhode Island House of Representatives. That ceremony will take place virtually at 2:00 p.m. and will be held at Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium in Providence. At 4:00 p.m., the Mayor-elect will take part in the inaugural ceremony for the Rhode Island State Senate, which will be held at Rhode Island College.
At 5:00 p.m., Mayor Picozzi will administer the Oath of Office virtually to the at-large members of the School Committee. The Mayor will also speak about the working partnership he intends to have with the School Committee and with Superintendent Thornton.
Finally, at 7:00, Mayor Picozzi will administer the Oath of Office virtually to the City Council. The Mayor will also open the City Council meeting and give his inaugural address.
Mayor-elect Picozzi also announced several new appointments, including the Police Chief, the Director of the Department of Public Works, the Director of Parks and Recreation, and the Director of the Planning Department.
According to the Mayor-elect’s office, the newly elected Police Chief will be Brad Connor and he will begin serving in mid-January. Rick Rathbun, the current Chief, will retire effective January 4th. Deputy Chief Mark Ullucci will be the interim Chief until Conner takes over. Brad Connor formerly served the department as Deputy Chief.
Eric Earls will be appointed as Director of the Department of Public Works and will also serve as the City Engineer. He most recently served as DPW Director in the city of Pawtucket.
Beverly Wiley will be appointed as Director of Parks and Recreation. Wiley will be leaving her current position as Compliance Officer in the Athletic Department at CCRI.
Finally, Bruce Kaiser will be appointed Director of the Planning Department. Kaiser has held positions in government such as Director of Administration/Assistant Town Manager in South Kingston, Town Administrator in Jamestown, and Director of Administration in Warwick.
