CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Rory McIlroy has won his first PGA Tour
event in record style.
The 20-year-old from Northern Ireland rolled in a 40-foot birdie
putt on the final hole Sunday to set the course record with a
10-under 62 and win the Quail Hollow Championship.
McIlroy, who celebrates his 21st birthday on Tuesday, becomes
the youngest PGA Tour winner since Tiger Woods in 1996. And he is
the first player in four years to win after making the cut on the
number.
The finish was unforgettable. McIlroy played his final five
holes in 5 under, including a 5-iron to 3 feet for eagle on the
15th hole that gave him the lead for good. It was the second
victory of his young career, and his first in America.
