Medical transport driver pleads not guilty in fatal crash, out on bail

COVENTRY, R.I. (WLNE) — A medical transport driver accused of a fatal head-on crash is out on bail after appearing in court Friday.

Dauda Elegushi, 26, is facing several charges, in a case involving the death of 77-year-old Lina Russo. 

Police said Elegushi had been driving Russo from a dialysis appointment when he crashed in November. He was allegedly drunk and had an open bottle in the van. 

Russo’s wheelchair was not properly secured, causing her to be thrown from the vehicle in the crash, said police.  

Elegushi worked for Assured Transportation, which is a subcontractor of Medical Transportation Management (MTM). 

The full list of charges Elegushi faces includes: 

  • DUI of liquor or drugs, resulting in death — 1st offense 
  • Driving to endanger, resulting in death 
  • Driving to endanger, resulting in physical injury 
  • Driving to endanger, resulting in physical injury 
  • Obstructing officer in execution of duty 
  • Driving without license — 1st offense 
  • Presence of alcohol while operating or riding in motor vehicle — 1st offense 

Elegushi pleaded not guilty to those charges. His bail was set at $20,000 surety.

He is due back in court on June 23 for a pretrial conference.
