Middletown beach cameras wildly popular heading into summer

MIDDLETOWN, RI (WLNE) – Middletown’s website is getting a lot more traffic than usual, as users are checking out the Sachuest Beach cameras so much that there has been a bit of lag on the feed, according to a town spokesperson.

The town said the cameras were installed a few years back but so far this year, it’s become one of the most popular attractions on the Middletown website.

According to the town’s website, people can check on parking availability or look at surf conditions.

Many beach-goers just recently found out about the cameras, including Ed Weiner, who comes all the way from Wayland, Mass. just to enjoy Sachuest Beach.

“First time today that we learned they had them and we will go online and try to take a look,” Weiner said. “I think they’re a great idea.”

Weiner believes, because of social distancing, many people are trying to play it safe and see if there’s a large crowd at the beach.

He said next time he takes the 90 minute drive he’ll be checking the cameras to make sure he is safe.

“If I turned on those cameras and seen it jam packed like you’ve seen with some of these pictures and photographs from other places in the country that would certainly deter us from coming down,” he said.
