Middletown police arrest 8 for DUI after Newport parade

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Middletown Police Department said they staffed patrol shifts with more officers to prevent DUIs during and after the Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
The department said they used Blue Riptide Grants to fund additional shifts, with two officers for each shift.
They also said they scheduled two more officers in anticipation of increased traffic from the parade.
Authorities said their efforts resulted in a total of eight DUI arrests, 54 traffic stops, 42 warnings and 12 citations.
Police said their efforts also resulted in no car accidents or traffic fatalities.
In a release, police said they will continue to work to reduce accidents, enforce DUI laws and ensure safe travel for the town of Middletown.
