Middletown police lieutenant charged with domestic assault

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — A Middletown police lieutenant is facing domestic assault charges, according to the Middletown Police Department.

Rhode Island State police arrested 50-year-old Lieutenant Richard Gamache, of Middletown, on Saturday during a traffic stop on Route 6 West at Glenbridge Avenue in Providence.

State Police say the driver, 38-year-old Tiffany Walaski, of North Providence, was driving erratically and at a speed of 90 miles an hour on Route 6 at approximately 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

Walaski was charged with the following:

  • Driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and/or drugs
  • Blood-alcohol concentration unknown
  • Domestic simple assault/battery
  • Refusal to submit to a chemical test

Police say Walaski was transported to RI State Police Headquarters and arraigned before a justice of the peace and release.

Gamache was charged with domestic simple assault/battery. He was transported to RI State Police Headquarters and arraigned before a justice of the peace and released.

According to the Middletown Police Department, the lieutenant was placed on investigative suspension and removed from duty pending on the outcome of the investigation.

Middletown police would not release any more details of the investigation at this point.
