MIDDLETOWN, RI (WLNE) – Police say they are still trying to identify the driver of a “dark-colored sedan” they believe is connected to a fatal hit and run accident involving a bicyclist on West Main Road.

The incident involving the sedan and a bicyclist happened on May 22.

Police say the sedan is seen on surveillance footage traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on West Main Road. Surveillance shows the car speeding through Portsmouth and continuing south into Middletown just before the accident.

The accident happened around 11:15 p.m. near the entrance to Harbor Village on West Main Road, according to police.

When police arrived, the male bicyclist, Elias Velasquez Chavez, 40, of Newport, was pronounced Dead On Arrival.

The driver of the ‘dark-colored sedan’ is seen making a U-Turn in a Burger King Parking Lot around 11:30 p.m., after hitting Velasquez Chavez and leaving him for dead.

Middletown Police are asking anyone that may have information about the accident or were in that area at the time to call them at 401-846-1144 or the anonymous tip line at 401-842-6516.
