Mohegan Bluffs staircase on Block Island closed to public starting May 23
NEW SHOREHAM , R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said Thursday the Mohegan Bluffs staircase on Block Island will be closed to visitors due to repairs starting May 23.
The staircase, which is part of the Edward S. Payne overlook on the island, will be closed until those repairs are complete.
“Public spaces must be accessible for public enjoyment and accessibility starts with safety,” said Terry Gray, who’s the director of the Department of Environmental Management. “We hope that those wishing to take in the dramatic view of the Atlantic from the overlook will understand that it must be temporarily closed while the staircase is being repaired.”
The Mohegan Bluffs are 150 feet high and has 140 steps that lead from the top of the bluff to the beach below.
