More Rhode Island National Guard members depart for D.C. on Sunday
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Rhode Island sent more National Guard members to Washington D.C. on Sunday, to support the 59th Presidential Inauguration.
The Rhode Island National Guard said approximately 100 soldiers and airmen were sent to D.C. over the weekend. Once in the country’s Capital, they will join 15,000 fellow guardsmen from across the nation in effort to support the peaceful transition of power.
The National Guard noted that they have participated in every Presidential Election since 1789, when Revolutionary War veterans escorted George Washington from his home in Mount Vernon to New York City.
