WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE) – Mount Saint Charles Academy has named a new boys hockey coach after the retirement of longtime head coach Bill Belisle.

Matthew Merten, former Providence College and semi-professional hockey player, was announced Thursday as the new head coach of the Mount Saint Charles boys hockey program.

Merten graduated from Mount Saint Charles in 1986 and played under Belisle before starting in goal for four years at Providence College. He attended the Vancouver Canucks training camp in 1990 and played for the Fort Wayne Komets and Greensboro Monarchs until 1991.

“No one can ever fill Coach’s shoes,” said Merten of Belisle. “But we can teach the kids to have the work ethic and attention to detail he instilled in the thousands of young men who played for him over the years.”
