Mud Hens Walk Off With Win Over the PawSox in the 11th

 PawSox news release…

(Toledo, OH) – Toledo catcher James McCann grounded a walkoff single through a drawn-in infield with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Toledo Mud Hens past the Pawtucket Red Sox, 4-3, Friday night at Fifth Third Field in the second of a four-game series to snap the PawSox four-game winning streak.

Will Middlebrooks, continuing a Major League injury rehab assignment, played the first nine innings at third base and went 1-for-5 with an RBI single in the seventh that gave Pawtucket a 3-2 lead.  Middlebrooks is now 7-for-27 with two walks and four RBI in eight games since resuming his rehab stint last week.

Left-fielder Ryan Roberts, who drilled a two-run home run to tie the game at 2 in the fourth inning (5), left the game in the fifth after awkwardly hitting the left field fence trying to catch Wade Gaynor’s triple.  Roberts, who limped off the field on his own power, joins Garin Cecchini as PawSox players to leave a game due to injury this week.

Reliever Dalier Hinojosa (0-5) retired the first seven batters he faced in the ninth through the 11th innings, but allowed a one-out single to Tyler Collins and then walked Mike Hessman to put two runners on base.  Jose Valdez relieved Hinojosa and immediately bobbled Trevor Crowe’s grounder hit back to the mound for an error that loaded the bases.

McCann delivered his game-winning hit on a 2-0 pitch to score Collins from third.  It was his second RBI of the game, as McCann’s RBI double in the second against PawSox starter Chris Hernandez put the Mud Hens in front 2-0.

Pawtucket (50-47) was four outs away from victory before the Mud Hens rallied to tie the game with two outs in the eighth against reliever Alex Wilson.  Collins lined a single and was followed by Hessman, who drilled an RBI double into the left field corner to knot the game at 3.

Hernandez did not allow a run after the second and lasted six full innings.  He was charged with two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out six.  Toledo starter Drew VerHagen allowed three runs and struck out five in his seven innings of work.

Game three of the series is scheduled for Saturday night with first pitch at 7:00 pm.  Right-hander Matt Barnes (4-6, 4.63) is slated to start for the PawSox against Toledo southpaw Mike Belfiore (2-5, 3.64).  Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:45 pm.

Following the ten-game road trip and the subsequent Triple-A All-Star break, the PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for a four game series against Buffalo that begins on Thursday, July 17th.
