Narragansett cancels Festival of Lights

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WLNE)– The town of Narragansett has canceled its Holiday Faire and Festival of Lights, originally scheduled for this weekend.

Town Manager James Tierney said the cancellation came after meetings between town and state officials, the town’s chamber of commerce, and department heads.

“Although the event was scaled down considerably earlier this week,” Tierney said in a statement, “after further consideration, the state contacted the chamber this morning and advised them of their concerns, and as such, the chamber will be postponing their previously approved event due to an abundance of caution.”

However, its not a total loss for the weekend. The virtual Jingle Bell Beach 5k Run is still on for Saturday, as is Santa’s ride through the neighborhoods, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A virtual tree lighting scheduled for Sunday will also still be streamed on the town’s YouTube channel.

The fireworks display planned for the weekend is also expected to be rescheduled for another date.
