NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WLNE)– Rhode Islanders hoping to stretch out along the iconic shore of Narragansett Town Beach will have to wait a little longer.

While the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management plans to open Scarborough Beach on Memorial Day this Monday, Town Manager James Tierney said more time was needed  to open the town’s beach.

In a written statement today, Tierney highlighted the struggles with training seasonal staff and opening the beach’s facilities while navigating the state-wide stay-at-home order and limits on gatherings.

Tierney also said the town was busy implementing a new online application system for purchasing passes and curbside pick-up.

Parks and Recreation Director Steve Wright asked for visitors “to be patient with our online sales office system and staff this season at the beach” in a press release from the department Thursday.

“We are here to serve you and are all in this together as a beach community,” Wright said.
