Nate Watson To Return to Providence for Fifth Year

It was announced today (March 17) that Providence College senior center Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) will return for his fifth season with the Friars. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the NCAA granted all winter athletes an extra season of eligibility.

“I wanted another opportunity to compete for a BIG EAST title and make a run at the NCAA’s with my teammates,” Watson said. “Playing at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center is a special experience. Everyone worked hard this year to make the 2020-21 season as realistic as possible, but there were elements of college basketball that we all missed. I did not want to end my career without being able to have my final season playing at the Dunk’ in front of my family and all the great fans in Friartown.”

Watson (Portsmouth, Va.), who earned All-BIG EAST Second Team accolades, NABC All-District 5 Second Team honors and USBWA All-District 1 accolades this month, led the Friars in scoring (16.9 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg). He also ranks third in the league in scoring (16.9 ppg). In 26 games this season, he recorded four double-doubles and seven games with 20 or more points. Watson shot 60 percent (180-299) from the field, which ranks second overall in the league. He was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll four times this season. Watson scored a career-high 30 points in the Friars’ loss to St. John’s on February 6. He also had a career-high 13 field goals in the game. Watson was 13-20 from field. He scored his 1,000th career point on December 20, 2020 in the Friars’ win at Seton Hall. He became the 51st Friar all-time to register 1,000 career points. In 122 career games, Watson has registered 1,317 points (10.8 ppg).

“We are excited that Nate will be returning to play for the Friars next season,” Head Coach Ed Cooley said. “Nate was one of the top centers in nation in 2021. Having him on the court will make the Friars a better team. I am happy for Nate that he will have the chance to experience another year of college basketball.”

The Friars finished the 2020-21 season with a 13-13 mark overall.
