Applications for unemployment benefits rose by about 25,000 last week, surprising experts who believed that number would actually drop slightly.
About 471,000 new applications were submitted nationwide.
Locally, Massachusetts officials report that the state added about 19,000 new jobs, with the state's unemployment rate sitting at 9.2%.
