Navy Security officer killed after struck by government vehicle

A Navy Security officer was struck by a vehicle and killed on Thursday afternoon while walking on Naval Station Newport.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. when a Navy employee was operating a government vehicle and struck a Navy security officer. The security officer, who has not yet been identified, was transported to the Rhode Island Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 11 p.m.

The accident remains under investigation. The identity of the victim will be released later on Friday pending notification of family members.
