PAWTUCKET, R.I. — Residents were evacuated and the power to twenty homes was cut in a Pawtucket neighborhood following a gas leak early Wednesday morning.

Crews responded to Japonica Street around 8:45 a.m., for the report of a gas leak.

A construction crew working in the basement of a vacant three family home cut the line, authorities say.

The Pawtucket Police and Fire Departments quickly blocked Japonica Street, and evacuated the neighborhood. National Grid was also called to the scene; cutting power to surrounding homes as officials work to fix the leak.

Neighbors told ABC6 News they were concerned about their animals which were left inside the homes during the evacuations.

Fire crews hope to have the leak fixed within an hour.
