New Bedford man arrested for firing shots in neighborhood

New Bedford Police responded to calls of shots fired in the area of Tinkham and Church St. on Tuesday around 5:30 p.m. Police arrived on the scene to discover that seven shots had been fired from a .45 caliber firearm.

A 2000 Chevrolet pick-up truck that was parked in the area was struck by several bullets.

After conducting a preliminary investigation police believed that the shooter was linked to one of the houses in the area. About three hours later detectives spotted a person matching the description of the suspect wearing different clothes. Police stopped and frisked the man to reveal a .45 caliber Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun with serial numbers obliterated hidden in his waistband.

The man was arrested and is scheduled to be arraigned in New Bedford District Court Wednesday morning.
