New Bedford cancels Memorial Day Parade due to COVID-19, plans for Virtual Memorials

NEW BEDFORD, MA (WLNE) – New Bedford cancelled their 2020 Memorial Day parade in order to uphold social distance measures to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The parade was originally scheduled for Memorial Day on Monday, May 25.

New Bedford plans to host virtual services instead to honor those who lost their lives serving their country.

Events include the Fishermen’s Memorial Service (May 25, 10:00 a.m.) and the City Memorial Service & Wreath Laying Ceremony (May 25, 12:00 a.m.). These events and others will air on New Bedford Cable Access channel and live-streamed on the City’s Facebook pages.

Local veteran groups that still plan on hosting events will no longer be open to the general public. But it will be recorded by New Bedford Cable Access on cable and online.
