New Bedford commemorates Memorial Day with Civil War exercise

NEW BEDFORD, Mass (WLNE) — The Greater New Bedford Civil War Roundtable conducted an exercise to commemorate Memorial Day Saturday morning.
The exercise was held at the Union Soldier’s Burial Site in Union Cemetery, and featured speakers including round table President Mark Mello and Mayor Jon Mitchell.
It included a wreath presentation, a gun salute, singing of period songs, and a reciting of the Gettysburg Address.
“Because of what we’ve inherited, we have responsibility to future generations to ensure that our republic endures and those that come after us continue to enjoy the blessings of liberty,” Mitchell said.
