New Bedford fire chief gives update on 7 fires since Thanksgiving

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — For New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger, it’s been a season this late in the fall.

“I think we had 8 structure fires in November and the month of December has been equally as busy,” Kruger said.
With about 7 fires since Thanksgiving alone, Kruger said nearly 50 people looking were displaced looking for another place to stay this holiday season.
“They’ve been large. We’ve had 4-alarm fires, third-alarm, second-alarm fire — even the first alarms as well,” he said.
Kruger said about half of the fires were accidental, while the others remain under investigation.
He said the Talbot Apartments fire was caused by a cooking mistake, while the fire on Sidney Street was electrical.
The Acushnet Ave and South Second Street fires are still under investigation, but Chief Kruger believes they weren’t intentional.
