New Bedford first responders help woman deliver baby in Walgreens

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The New Bedford Fire Department first responders helped a woman in labor deliver her baby outside the Walgreens on Pleasant Street Thursday afternoon.

The department said Command Unit Two and Engine One alongside the crew of New Bedford EMS Medic One and Paramedic One all assisted in the delivery of a healthy baby girl.

The Walgreens location where the delivery occurred was across from fire department headquarters.

“[Firefighters] suctioned and stimulated the baby and the crew of New Bedford EMS Medic One clamped and cut the umbilical cord,” the department said. “Paramedic 1 also assisted with care of the neonate and mother.”

They added that a City of New Bedford Facilities/Infrastructure employee was on scene to assist the mother.
