New Bedford house fire leaves woman seriously injured

NEW BEDFORD, MASS. — Eleven people were displaced from their home and one was airlifted to the hospital after a fire broke out in a New Bedford home Monday night.

According to police, the fire started on the third floor of 1050 Pleasant Street around 8:30 p.m. Monday night.

A 48-year-old New Bedford woman was first taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, but was later airlifted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital for significant burns to her body. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Officials say the fire was extinguished within ten minutes of the original dispatch and confined to the top floor. No other injuries have been reported.   

“I am very proud of our firefighters. They did an incredible job. In life-threatening situations, seconds count. Rapid and effective response is the key to a positive outcome in situations like these,” said Fire Chief Michael Gomes. 

Police and fire personnel are still investigating the incident.
