New Bedford man arrested after D’Angelo’s assault

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) – A New Bedford man was arrested after a fight at a Dartmouth D’Angelo’s Sandwich Shop on Sunday.
Police responded to the Dartmouth Street restaurant at 6:20 p.m. where they spoke to the victim, a 29-year-old Dartmouth man, who said he had been jumped by several males and beaten with a police-style baton.
The victim added that the men tried to steal his gold necklace and also brandished a firearm.
The men also damaged the victim’s vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Eugenio Gonsalves Andrade, 21, of New Bedford, was identified as the primary suspect and was later located and arrested.
The attack was found to not be random, and that Andrade and the victim knew each other.
Andrade was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, malicious damage to a motor vehicle, armed assault to rob, and assault and battery.
The baton and the firearm have not yet been located.
The incident is currently being investigated regarding the involvement of the other men who were with Andrade during the assault.
