New Bedford Police have arrested a man for attempting to rob a 7-11 at knife point.

It happened around midnight when Edward Tuffo, 50, of New Bedford, entered the 7-11 and demanded money from the female clerk, brandishing a knife.

The owner of the 7-11 then threatened Tuffo with a baseball bat, prompting him to flee the store.

The owner followed Tuffo to the area of Mitchell Street, where Tuffo then discarded clothing and a kitchen knife.

The suspect was then taken into custody at the intersection of Coggeshall Street and Belleville Avenue, and charged with one count of attempted armed robbery.

Tuffo is scheduled to be arraigned in New Bedford District Court.
