A New Bedford man was arrested Monday morning after stealing a charity box from a gas station and then resisting arrest.

The clerk at Sam’s Mobile Gas station on Ashley Blvd told police that a man had entered the station and stole a charity money box that was on the register counter.

The clerk then chased the suspect, 26-year-old Patrick Maccini, who fled on foot and escaped.

Police say that the suspect dropped his cell phone during the pursuit. Within minutes, the officer on scene observed Maccini walking in the neighborhood of the gas station. He was identified by the clerk and taken into custody. The charity box was not recovered.

Maccini was charged with larceny from a person and resisting arrest. He will be arraigned in New Bedford District Court.
