New Bedford man to serve three years after slashing ex-girlfriend
NEW BEDFORD, MASS. (WLNE)- A New Bedford man was sentenced to serve three years in state prison this past week in Fall River Superior Court.
Rolando Ibarra, 40, pleaded guilty to a charge for Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, from back in 2018 when he slashed his ex-girlfriend with a knife.
The victim was asleep in bed when she received a call, from who she thought was her stepson asking her to open the door.
When she opened the door, Ibarra pushed his way inside the apartment. When asked to leave, he refused and pulled out a knife, slashing her in the face and arm.
After police responded to the scene, the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The victim, who was the only eyewitness of the incident died in December 2020 of a drug overdose.
Items from the incident were sent out for DNA testing and statements made by her during her 911 call were used as evidence in the trial.
“I am pleased the defendant was held accountable for his violent assault against the victim despite the fact that she passed away prior to the trial,” says District Attorney Quinn.
