NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The Bristol District Attorney’s Office said that an arrest was made Sunday in connection with the shooting of an undercover officer earlier this week.

Lt. Scott Carola said that New Bedford police officers alongside Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section and ATF agents arrested Cheybane Vasconcelos-Furtado at a home on Worcester Street in New Bedford.

The 20-year-old was charged with two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and two counts of assault and battery by discharge of a firearm, among several other charges.

District Attorney Thomas Quinn added that Vasconcelos-Furtado would be arraigned Monday.

Det. Lavar Gilbert was working in an unmarked police car on Rivet and Orchard streets when he was shot in the face on Monday.

He was released from the hospital on Friday. Police said they don’t believe Gilbert was targeted.

Carola added that the investigation into the Monday night shooting remains active and ongoing.
