New Bedford RMV reopens following solar panel fire

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) – The Registry of Motor Vehicles in New Bedford is back open following a roof fir, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

The RMV opened for regular business hours at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

New Bedford Fire Department said a solar panel fire started Tuesday afternoon. All employees were safely evacuated. 


NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) – Fire crews were on scene at the Registry of Motor Vehicles in New Bedford Tuesday afternoon as the registry and a nearby Massachusetts State Lottery office were shut down.  

The service center located at 212 Theodore H Rice Boulevard was shut down due to a reported “facilities issue” sometime before 3:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

New Bedford Fire Department said the building was evacuated after a fire on the roof near the solar panels. All employees were safely evacuated. 

The RMV tweeted that the facility will remain closed for the rest of the afternoon, as will the New Bedford office of the Massachusetts State Lottery.
