New Bedford war memorial vandalized

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) – A Spanish-American War memorial was vandalized in New Bedford’s Clasky Common Park this past week.

There was red spray paint on two sides of the monument with what appeared to be stars and other symbols.

Residents across from the park told ABC6 News, they believed graffiti appeared on Saturday.

“It sucks. I mean, because somebody is going to have to clean it. So, it’s just a waste of manpower. It’s just another thing they need to do, in addition to other things they have to manage in the city.”

ABC6 News contacted the mayor’s office about the spray-painted memorial. A spokesperson said they were aware of the vandalism, and city workers would be cleaning up the graffiti on Tuesday.

The person responsible could face fines, and even jail time, under Massachusetts law.

ABC6 News reached out to New Bedford police, but didn’t receive a response by the time this article was posted.
