New Bedford’s Feast of the Blessed Sacrament cancelled for 2020 due to COVID-19

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) – New Bedford city officials have canceled the 106th annual Feast of the Blessed Sacrament due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event was scheduled for July 30 through Aug.2.

The city says the Club and the Feast Committee will announce further details about the cancellation and virtual commemoration, or other feast-related arrangements soon.

The feast was founded in 1915 by four Madeiran immigrant men to recreate the religious festivals common in the villages of their home island to commemorate their safe passage to America.

“This traditional midsummer gathering for family and friends is considered to be the world’s largest festival honoring Portuguese Culture,” a spokesperson for New Bedford said.
