PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) – Rhode Island DOT moved up a lane split change on the 6/10 Connector originally planned for Thursday, due to Friday’s anticipated storm.

Drivers leaving Providence Wednesday evening hit heavy traffic heading south to Cranston or west to Johnston.

RIDOT officials said this traffic shift is part of the 6/10 Interchange Project, and will move the actual split of Routes 6 and 10.

The change will move the split about half a mile north of its current location, to the area of the Atwells Avenue overpass.

RIDOT said drivers will now need to move into the appropriate lanes earlier so they can get onto Route 10 South or Route 6 West.

“In our observations, the way people are navigating through it, is that we’re going to be fine, that it worked out precisely the way our engineers had planned it to work out,” RIDOT Director Peter Alviti said, “our project managers will be out there, our traffic engineers to make sure that if we need to change anything we do it quickly.”

The change only affects traffic using the 6/10 Connector Outbound heading south and west, and no lanes will be closed.
